I used to hate my SodaStream. It was a clunky, expensive gadget that I barely ever touched – and the canisters weren’t cheap either. One day, my dad handed me a spare CO₂ keg he’d been using for his fish tanks to help grow the aquarium plants better. Since it was food‑grade (bought from a homebrew supplier), I figured I could adapt it to refill my SodaStream bottles.
The problem? SodaStream had at some point introduced an anti‑tamper feature that made refilling the canisters almost not worthwhile, even with an adapter. All I managed was about a half‑full bottle before the process got frustratingly slow. I simply stopped using it.
Then I started craving soda water at home again. It’s just CO₂‑infused filtered water – no additives, no plastic waste. So I invested in an adapter hose that connects a CO₂ keg directly to the SodaStream. My first attempt failed because I didn’t tighten the connection fully – I was afraid of breaking it. Once I tightened everything properly, the system worked flawlessly: no leaks, easy press‑and‑release, and a perfect carbonation level. Now it’s a staple in my kitchen.
SodaStream Flavors
I’ve tried a handful of flavours
- Vanilla Pepsi
- Pepsi Max
- Peach tea
- Ginger beer
- Passiona
- Solo
What I don’t love is that they’re all 0 % sugar. I prefer to keep my soda low‑sugar but not sweetener when I can help it so I mix a little Cottees Cordial – the sugary version – with my SodaStream. It gives me just enough sweetness without the harsh “zero” taste, and if you dilute it a bit more, you’re still drinking only a small amount of sugar per serving.
Surprisingly, I have even come to really enjoy a squeeze of a small lemon or lime with a full glass of soda stream. It’s now my go to refreshing drink, no added sugar, the natural way.
